Bouwe van der Eems and his wife Debbie have been homeschooling their five children since 2000. Bouwe is actively involved in the Association for Homeschooling and the Pestalozzi Trust and has taken part in various meeting with Department officials since 2004. With his family he has been running the SAHomeschoolers website since 2010.

Gauteng Department of Education does not recognize homeschool rights

On 15 November 2013, during a meeting of Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) with homeschooling parents, it was confirmed again that government views home education as a right, but parents should first receive permission before they can exercise this right. An organisation that calls itself “Tuisonderrig” arranged this meeting.
